The health track of the G20 ummit arrived at a consensus on three broad priorities the Indian presidency had proposed during the ministers’ meeting in Gandhinagar last month. WHO Special Envoy for Access to Covid-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-Accelerator) Dr Ayoade Alakija speaks to Anonna Dutt about the lessons learned from the Covid-19 experience and the need to give a say to all countries when it comes to issues such as vaccines and diagnostics that affect them.
While Dr Alakija said the most significant achievement of the health track was the launch of the Global Initiative on digital Health with the Global South leading the way, she also expressed concern on the interim medical countermeasures platform proposed by India.
The platform India has proposed — and received consensus on — focuses on creating networks for research and manufacturing of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics across the world. She says any initiative that runs parallel to the legally backed pandemic treaty under development threatens to prejudice negotiations.
